5 hidden types of workplace discrimination

On Behalf of Hantzes & Associates | Dec 7, 2023 | Workplace discrimination |

In the modern workplace, the battle against discrimination is far from over.

While overt forms of bias have been widely addressed, subtle and insidious forms of discrimination persist beneath the surface. Understanding and recognizing these hidden nuances is important for fostering a fair and inclusive work environment.

1. Microaggressions

Microaggressions are subtle, often unintentional comments or behaviors, that marginalize individuals based on their race, gender or other protected characteristics. These seemingly innocuous remarks can create a hostile work environment, eroding the well-being of targeted employees.

2. Unequal opportunities

In some workplaces, the distribution of opportunities may not be as transparent as it appears. Employees may find themselves excluded from important projects, promotions or training programs based on factors unrelated to their skills and performance. This subtle discrimination perpetuates inequality and stifles professional growth.

3. Tokenism

Tokenism occurs when individuals from underrepresented groups get included merely to give the appearance of diversity, without genuine inclusion or respect for their contributions. This can lead to feelings of isolation and inadequacy, as employees may sense that their presence is merely symbolic.

4. Glass ceiling

The glass ceiling is an invisible barrier that impedes the career progression of certain individuals, often based on gender or other characteristics. While progress is ongoing, many workplaces still have disparities in leadership positions.

5. Age discrimination

Age discrimination can manifest through stereotyping, sidelining or excluding individuals based on their age. Older employees may feel overlooked for their experience. This can lead to not receiving deserved promotions.

In FY 2022, people submitted 73,485 new discrimination charges to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. While some discrimination happens more covertly, employees have rights.
